Luke Perry’s death: Strokes don’t just kill the elderly

Published

on

After ‘Riverdale’ actor Luke Perry’s death, many started to question how someone at his age could have a stroke. It actually turns out that it’s more common than you think. We explain.

The risk of stroke increases with age. But it can be particularly dangerous for middle-age adults.

The actor and 1990s heartthrob Luke Perry died at 52, his publicist said Monday, following a massive stroke last week.

More than 795,000 Americans each year suffer a stroke. About 140,000 people die each year from stroke, the nation’s fifth leading cause of death, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

It's a big shock to hear that Luke Perry has died (and of a massive stroke at that) at only 52. So very sad, poor man. However, I noticed that he had aged a lot in recent years and I wondered if he may have been a heavy smoker, which would have seriously jeopardized his health. I also read that he had revealed about 6 years ago that he had been diagnosed with pre-cancerous growths on his colon (which presumably required surgery) and that, as a result, he had improved his diet, cutting back on red meat consumption, etc. My mum also died of a massive stroke (intra-cerebral haemorrhage) at 82 which was very sudden, although she had had a 'minor' stroke a year and a half earlier, but, of course, she was 30 years older than Luke and it's far more common in people who are much older than 50'ish to have strokes. My mum was pretty healthy and active up until she had her 'minor' stroke, and would still cycle, she still worked part-time, ate healthily, wasn't a smoker, etc. She did apparently have high blood pressure though which she hadn't taken medication for, no doubt because she knew the medication for it could cause other medical issues so she didn't want her quality of life to be severely impaired if she did take it. When she had her 'minor' stroke she was prescribed a cocktail of medication to lower her blood pressure and to prevent clots, one of which was Warfarin (which is also often used as a rat poison), and, not surprisingly, she said that when she took the drugs they made her feel awful, as if all the life had been knocked out of her and that they made her so tired she could barely do anything. So, I think she only sporadically took the tablets because of that (and if I was in that situation I might well do the same thing) and I also believe that the Warfarin, which is a blood thinner, may have been the main cause of her fatal intra-cerebral haemorrhage. Obviously, every person is different and some people can tolerate certain medications better than others and I certainly wouldn't recommend anyone with high blood pressure, blood clots, etc, to not get medical treatment for their condition. It's always up to the individual to weigh up the pros and cons of situations and to do what feels / is right for them.

I was saddened by the passing of Luke Perry, but remember Hollywood men – when you take testosterone your whole life that increases your risk of stroke and pancreatic cancer. Most of you may know this, but if not, you have been warned. I do not like to see this happen, even if I do not agree with your lifestyle I am tired of seeing you all get ill so young, ie: Michael Landon, Patrick Swatze, etc… I am only 52 years old myself. I am praying for all of you at this point.

OK how many people found it funny when this guy on the video said older people experience brain shrinkage to make more room for any swelling…LOL…I don't think so dude! It may shrink but it wasn't "designed" to shrink to allow for more space should a person have a CVA! LOL! Too funny!…"well my brain has shrunk but now it won't be a problem if I have a stroke"…LOL! I can spot a non-medical person from across the street! …hahaha!

I was very lucky , I had various symptoms, finally diagnosed with PULMONARY EMBOLISM … And was immediately put on blood thinners. This saved me from having a stroke . My advice is know your body. If something feels strange ..or not right , see a doctor..if that doctor says everything's ok, and you still feel something is not right , see another doctor . Rest in peace Luke Perry.

Factors such as excessive weight, personal habits such as smoking, drug use, and alcohol, family medical history, and many others affect the risk of stroke. Most of them can be improved by changes in behavior and/or lifestyle. Having a choice is power. Luke Perry was 52. That puts everyone within risk.

If you are going to get a stroke its 100% your fate. If a healthy diet and exercise arent enough to save you then NOTHING is. There are people that never smoke a single thing in their life and get lung cancer. People with perfect diets and exercise have stokes and heart disease. I promise, nothing you do will "save" you. If you are destined to die from a stroke or heart attack in your 20's then thats what is going to happen. Live life. Enjoy it. Because today might be your last, regardless of how healthy you think you are.

A blood vessel doesn't necessarily need to break for the to be a stroke. A hemorrhagic stroke is a when a blood vessel breaks in the head causing a brain bleed. The brain filling the skull takes up space and applies pressure to the brain and damages it (intracerebral hemorrhagic stroke). This can be caused by head trauma, and high blood pressure. The other type of hemorrhagic stroke is subarachnoid which is when a vessel in the tissue between the skull in the brain bleeds out such as in a bursting aneurysm ( a type of vessel deformity that can be cause by high blood pressure). The other type of stroke is ischemic where a clot blocks the flow of a vessel to the brain tissues and that brain tissue becomes hypoxic (absent of oxygen) and begins to die.
