5:50 This is where school leavers will struggle as they have zero previous experiences. While it’s very easy for older people who are changing careers to give examples of working under safety regulations and pressure.

Hi there, love your videos so thank you for being for informative!
I am about to sit my train managers interview for a trainee train driver. My role would be OTM operator and driver. Have you any advice on what questions they'd ask me or will it be the same sort of questions for all TOC's? Thank you 🙂

Wow if that's the interview to get a train driver job there (well to at least start training) then any ape should pass. Rather standard and easy to answer questions (easier again with resume hours (work experience). Long hours of concentration … duh driving non stop 3+ hrs in a car requires this or you end up off the road.

Tell Me About Yourself and Introduce Yourself for Job Interviews: A Guide to Making a Strong First Impression

When you’re sitting across from a potential employer during a job interview, one of the most common—and often most daunting—questions you’ll face is, “Tell me about yourself.” This open-ended prompt is a golden opportunity to set the tone for the rest of the interview, showcase your professional strengths, and make a lasting impression. But how do you introduce yourself effectively in this context? In this article, we’ll explore strategies to craft a compelling response that highlights your qualifications, aligns with the job role, and resonates with the interviewer.

Understanding the Purpose Behind the Question
Before diving into crafting your response, it’s essential to understand why interviewers ask, “Tell me about yourself.” This question serves multiple purposes:

Breaking the Ice: It’s a way to ease into the conversation, allowing both you and the interviewer to settle into the flow of the interview.

Assessing Communication Skills: Your ability to articulate your background concisely and effectively demonstrates your communication skills—a key trait in any job.

Evaluating Fit: The interviewer is gauging how your experience, skills, and career goals align with the job role and the company’s values.

With this in mind, your answer should be a well-crafted narrative that presents your professional journey in a way that naturally leads into a discussion of your qualifications for the role.

Structuring Your Response: The Present-Past-Plans Formula
A popular and effective method to structure your response is the Present-Past-Plans formula. This approach allows you to introduce yourself in a way that flows logically and highlights the most relevant aspects of your professional life.

Present: Start by describing your current role and responsibilities. This sets the stage by establishing your present situation and areas of expertise.

Past: Next, provide a brief overview of your past experience and accomplishments that led you to your current role. Focus on the skills and experiences that are most relevant to the job you’re applying for.

Plans: Finally, talk about your career goals and how they align with the position you’re interviewing for. This demonstrates your enthusiasm for the role and shows that you’re thinking long-term.

Tailoring Your Introduction to the Job
While the Present-Past-Future structure provides a solid foundation, it’s crucial to tailor your introduction to the specific job and company. Research the company’s mission, values, and recent achievements, and weave this information into your response. This demonstrates that you’ve done your homework and are genuinely interested in the company.

Dos and Don’ts of Introducing Yourself in an Interview
Dos:

Be Concise: Keep your answer to about 1-2 minutes. This is enough time to highlight key points without losing the interviewer’s attention.

Focus on Professional Achievements: While it’s okay to briefly mention personal interests if they’re relevant, your focus should be on your professional background.

Practice: Rehearse your introduction so that it flows naturally, but avoid sounding rehearsed. Aim for a conversational tone.

Stay Positive: Frame your experiences and transitions in a positive light, even if you’ve faced challenges or setbacks.
Don’ts:

Don’t Recite Your Resume: Your introduction should complement your resume, not duplicate it. Use this opportunity to provide context and narrative to your career progression.

Avoid Over-sharing Personal Details: While it’s important to be personable, steer clear of sharing too much personal information. The interviewer is primarily interested in your professional qualifications.

Don’t Ramble: Stay focused on the key points that align with the job you’re applying for. Avoid going off on tangents or including irrelevant details.

Prepare well, and let your introduction be the first step toward securing the job of your dreams!

The interviewer will ask you this question because they want to ensure they hire someone who wants to work for their company long-term.
